Let me say for starters that Durgamati has a lot of political undertones that are extremely relevant today. This is a film that is cloaked in the horror genre but there is much more going on under the surface.

Bhumi Pednekar stars as Chanchal Chauhan IAS/Durgamati, who has been under a lot of trouble because of previous trouble caused between her and Shakti (played by Karan Kapadia). Jisshu Sengupta plays ACP Abhay Singh (also Shakti's brother). Arshad Warsi plays a politician named Ishwar Prasad and Mahie Gill plays a CBI officer, Satakshi Ganguly.

The film is well made with good sound design. Kudos to the art directors for putting together a film that looks good as well. The film, if re-released in theatres at some point in the future, would definitely be worth a watch. I only wish the film was cut down by about 20 minutes in about the first hour. All of the details in relation to the mansion were not required and would have made for a better paced film.

I want to get to the last 30 minutes because that is the saving grace and makes the movie worthwhile to watch. The last 30 minutes are crisp and well-connected and serve the screenplay well.

Bhumi Pednekar does a fairly good job in essaying the role of Durgamati, but she far impresses as Chanchal, the IAS officer. Arshad Warsi is crisp and plays his part very well. Jisshu Sengupta is very effective in his role. I certainly warm up to Mahie Gill as the film moves on. I wish there was a little bit more with Karan Kapadia as I think the makers could have easily banked upon the chemistry between Karan and Bhumi, which was palpable through the screen. I really liked every time I saw the two of them on screen together.

A tighter screenplay and less screaming would have made this an excellent fare, but I'll say this one is slightly above average.
