Good Newws

It has been a while since Bollywood found a fun-filled comedy, which is not completely meaningless and a story, which is mad yet endearing. Raj Mehta has managed to give us both.

Varun Batra (Akshay Kumar) and Dipti (Kareena Kapoor) have been married for the past 7 years. They are both successful and are doing great individually and also as a couple. They are good looking, fit but making babies together has been a challenge for them. A doctor consultation reveals their best chance to have a child is through in-vitro fertilization. Given Dipti is so keen on having a baby, Varun reluctantly gives in. On the day of the test to determine whether the IVF has been successful, the couple is in for a rude shock. Varun Batra’s sperm has been mixed up with a Honey Batra (Diljit Dosanjh)’s specimen, resulting in Dipti conceiving Honey’s child and Honey’s wife Monica (Kiara Advani) conceiving Varun’s child. The premise of the film is in itself hilarious but what ensues is also sweet and endearing.

Raj Mehta for all his assisting days (Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Kapoor & Sons, Teri Meri Kahani etc) seems to have mastered treading the thin line between hilarity and crass. The dialogues (Rishabh Sharma) tend to lean a little closer towards risqué but they are not remotely offensive. In fact, most of the first half of the film will find you with a smirk. It is the second half that gets a little half baked and slightly unsteady but Mehta’s actors pitch it perfectly, making Good Newws a good way to end the year at the Box Office.

The film obviously belongs to the four protagonists, who are as different from each other as chalk and cheese but together they are explosive onscreen. Akshay Kumar being Akshay Kumar, and co-producer, is almost in every frame and rules it like a pro. Be it dancing on ‘Laal Ghaghra..’ in a laal ghaghra or rocking his salt pepper look, he is in full-form in the truest meaning of the term. He makes a great pair with Kareena, they have excellent chemistry and do justice as a couple who have been married for years. But if you think Kareena will let Akshay have a solo run, you are mistaken. She not only looks fabulous she is one of the best things in the second half of the film.

In absolute contrast but equally effective are the other Batra couple, Diljit and Kiara. The two are at the other end of the spectrum, as compared to Akshay and Kareena but they are extremely affable. The Dosanjh-Advani chemistry is so earthy, that they make other Batras’ sophistication look too uptight.

Though Good Newws has some good party numbers by Tanishk Bagchi, Rochak Kohli, Lauv, Badshah, Sukhbir and others, they are just way too many of them. Most of them do nothing for the script and only give the cast an opportunity to play dress up.

For a film which has most of the things going for it, the small impairment with the music can definitely be ignored. Here’s hoping to see a lot more of Raj Mehta as a director!
