This Vishal Bhardwaj film is the official Hindi cinema adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Haider brings together some of the most talented: Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, and Irrfan Khan. Will this powerhouse of a cast be able to bring this film’s storyline one hundred notches higher?

Haider is about Haider, played by Shahid Kapoor, who is the son of Dr. Hilal Meer, played by Narendra Jha, and Ghazala, played by Tabu, who finds out that his father has gone missing. Dr. Hilal Meer leaves Ghazala as a half-widow but she ends up marrying Khurram, Dr. Hilal’s brother, who has always been madly in love with her. Haider does not approve of this as he believes his father is still alive. The only person who stands by his side during this time is Arshia, played by Shraddha Kapoor. The search for his father leaves Haider in a place in which he has no time for love. He keeps trying to find a space of comfort for himself, but he may never find it.

This film made my jaw drop. Not only because of the scintillating performances but because of how the theme of the film is woven in so seamlessly into the characters in the film. The characters are spelled out so well that each performance enhances the narrative. The film is violent and filled with gore. The film is dark. But the film is so good.

I remember coming out of the film thinking that this was the best performance I’ve ever seen of Shahid Kapoor’s. Shahid Kapoor flawlessly goes through the complex emotions of his complex character. He gets into the skin of his character thoroughly. I’d be surprised if he was left without a nomination for best actor in any award show. Shraddha Kapoor is top-notch. This is her year. She gets the range of emotions of each one of her characters so well. She blows the audience away. Narendra Jha is haunting, as he should be. Kay Kay Menon is great, as expected. Tabu is absolutely phenomenal – so much so that she makes one shiver with her riveting performance.

The film has excellent cinematography. It has an excellent screenplay. It is a must-watch.

  2. No way with 800 (!) films made per year and a potential audecnie of more than 1 billion movie-goers I reckon they would kick the butt of Hollywood stars Of course, I would still have trouble recognising them!
