After interviewing both Taapsee Pannu and Shoojit Sircar, we knew that the film Pink would be an honest venture. We knew that there were some thoughts in relation to the narrative of the film and whether it was based on rape victims. But the film was so much more than that.

Pink traces the tale of one eventful night that leads to simultaneous charges for both the men and women involved. Amidst the allegations are controversies surrounding prostitution, consent, force, questionable characters of females, and stereotypes. The thriller, set in Delhi, delves into a number of issues, but really is a courtroom drama that, little by little, leads us to the actual story of what occurred the night in question.

I need to put this out there: after a very long time, I have felt a range of emotions in a single scene - helplessness, rage, courage, faith, fatigue, and sadness. I felt this range of emotion while Minal (Taapsee Pannu) was being questioned, when Falak (Kirti Kulhari) finally broke down and cried, and when Mr. Sehgal (Amitabh Bachchan) introduced his trio of girls to his ailing wife. For a director to pull at so many different emotions is a high compliment - and Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury does exactly that.

While some sequences in the courtroom seemed rushed, specifically the verdict, the courtroom tale was enthralling. The screenplay was tight, the script effective, and the camerawork right on point. The background score enhanced each scene.

But this film belongs to Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Ritesh Shah (story), and its actors. What a fine job the entire team has done to bring to light riveting scenes of emotions. When one can feel the helplessness of the character, when one can feel the anguish of the actor, that is when you know you are completely gripped as an audience member. It is high time a film like this is made. It is high time Hindi films do not show force and manhandling a woman as sexy or wanted. It is high time and it is about time.

Taapsee Pannu moves me from courage to fear to anxiety to anger in a matter of seconds - that is how powerful she is. Kudos also to Kirti Kulhari for displaying the anguish her character must have felt so well. Andrea Tariang was effective. Amitabh Bachchan delivers another fine performance and really, nobody would have been better for the role he played - nobody else could have delivered the dialogues he did with such power and such emotion. Piyush Mishra is fantastic. The boys, especially Angad Bedi, do a fine job.

A film like this is not made very often but when it is made, it is important to encourage people to watch such a film. Not just because of how fine the film is but how fine the message is. The sarcasm laced in each girl safety rule stated by Amitabh Bachchan made me smirk, scoff, as tears rolled down my cheeks.

To every single person, you MUST watch this film.
