The Sky is Pink - Red Carpet: Siddharth Roy Kapur

Often, producers do not receive the credit they deserve in financially backing films. But their jobs as producers is looking at the overall feasibility of a project, with a lens that is quite vast and broad. When we had the opportunity to catch up with producer Siddharth Roy Kapur at the TIFF red carpet, for The Sky is Pink, we made a point of talking to him about his role and perspective through the years.

So I was going to ask you first of all, I mean you have been doing this for a very long time. And the Toronto International Film Festival is obviously one of the top film festivals in the world. The Sky Is Pink is a fantastic film. As a producer, when you are approached with a film, a subject matter that is based on reality, what are some of the initial thoughts as a producer and how do you ensure that as a producer, you want to back a film?

I think the first thing I look for in a script is “does it move me emotionally”? Is it something that really affects me? Makes me look at life differently, think about things differently and I think that's a reaction as an audience and not really as a producer. So the first hat that I wear is that of the audience. After that is when the production hat kicks in. You know the budget, the star cast required, the logistics of it, all of that. And that of course is the next step in your professional job. But to answer your question, the first thing is obviously how emotionally connected you are to the material.

So when you're taking on a subject matter and the film starts somewhere in the 80s, most of the 90s, comes to the millennium, how do you take that as a producer? What are some of the challenges of showing different periods of time?

You know, that’s a challenge for the production design team, for the costume team, anyone associated with the look and feel of the film. Hair and makeup. And of course for the actors themselves. So there's a lot of thought that goes into that because you don't want it to stand out too much and make a big point of it. But at the same time, you want to ensure that you are being authentic to the period. So it's a wonderful challenge to have. It's exciting!

Especially there is that one scene in South Hall where you show the market and we were watching it and we were like “I wonder if it still looks the same now”. Do you remember that scene in particular?

The one in the supermarket?

Yes, South Hall.

Yeah, I mean we made a point of it to make sure that it looked as authentic as possible to that particular era.
