Konkona Sen Sharma, who won a lot of praise for her directorial debut titled Death In The Gunj, candidly stated that the gender disparity in the Indian Film Industry is still very much rampant. She also mentioned there are not enough female filmmakers and varied roles for women.

Konkona pointed out, “There are not enough women filmmakers. There is not enough variety in terms of representation of women. There is not enough honesty in terms of representation of women in terms of women.”

“We are going forward. They are making small steps. It is good that we are also self-reflecting upon it and our choices. We are being aware of these things and talking about it. I think this is also important.” She also mentioned that while films these days are made on social issues, there aren’t enough things that we are talking about. “We don't want a film which is just a message film. The film has to be good. We aren't talking about enough things.” Her film Lipstick Under My Burkha – which talked about female sexuality was considered to be a lady oriented by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and struggled to get a passing certificate.

She also stated that while things have generally improved, the conditions continue to be adverse for women on the sets as well as outdoor shoots. “There were hardly any bathrooms for women to use, especially in an outdoor shoot. Before vanity vans, it was very difficult. These are very basic things; these kinds of things should exist in the workplace for our workers to work properly. The environment has to be very friendly towards women” stated Konkona.
