By BFFC Network Wednesday, May 30, 2018 01:33: AM
Rolex Rasathy is a New York based singer and songwriter. She's been trained in South Indian classical or Carnatic music all her life and has been a regular performer and teacher of the art form, while being heavily influenced by Jazz, RnB and Hip Hop as well. She released her first experimental English/Tamil EP "Vellavattai" which she wrote when she lived in Sri Lanka. Since then she has collaborated with artists all over the world and performed extensively, with her music being featured on many prestigious mediums including the BBC Asian Network. She is currently working on a collaborative EP with Boka and SoFIRE and her second solo project.

We catch up with her as she sets up to set the stage on fire at desiFEST, 2018!

Being raised in New York, you must have had so many musical influences. What/Who are your musical influences?
Actually, I moved around a lot growing up but stayed a long time in Buffalo, NY. Because of that Toronto became a second home to me and I feel that the sounds of Toronto have had such an influence on me, including Drake, The Weeknd, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Ramriddlz, etc. RnB is one of my greatest influences, I love SZA, Jhene Aiko, and the fearlessness and authenticity that artists like M.I.A. and Princess Nokia bring to the table. When I start to think about my classical training, Carnatic music has an undeniably heavy influence on me, and I'm really inspired by Sid Sriram who brings these two art worlds that second generation South Asians experience so tastefully together.

Is it challenging to maintain your own identity in a world of music that also puts pressures on artists to be active on social media?
1000% yes. Branding is so key in today's world that does stress me out a little bit. But Rolex Rasathy is my alter ego, so in a way, social media enables her existence, and I'm grateful for that.

What are you looking forward to the most when coming to Toronto?
Toronto is the city I'm most in love with, especially in the summer. I'm looking forward to working with artists here and filming music videos, basically planning for the future South Asian artist takeover!!! So excited to meet the other desiFEST artists as well.

What can the audiences expect from you at desiFEST?
They can expect an eclectic set that will make them feel, make them dance, and make them happy.
